An elliptical trainer is a stationary workout machine used to simulate stair climbing as well as running and walking. That setup, along with the direct-contact brakes, makes this type the most challenging to ride. On the bright side, it also allows this bike to provide an authentic cycling experience.
To tackle the resistance on such a bike, all you have to do is turn a small knob.

One of the most important considerations you should keep in mind when choosing between these two should be the purpose you have in mind for it…or say your fitness goals.
Which Is Best for Losing Weight and Burning Fat? – The Elliptical
Well, theoretically, an elliptical trainer exercises your body, which will increase metabolism and burn more calories compared to a stationary bike.
That makes sense, considering that elliptical trainers are designed to train the whole body, whereas exercise bikes are geared towards the lower body.
It’s more about comfort and intensity here…
The matter is a bit more complicated than that though, as how fast you’re going to put off pounds will ultimately depend on how comfortable you are with the machine you use as well as the intensity of your workouts.
After all, the comfier you feel using a machine, the more effort you’re going to put when working out with it, which will let you burn more calories. If a machine feels awkward, on the other hand, achieving your desired weight loss goal will prove to be a daunting task.
Turns out, the intensity is what really makes a difference
That said, it’s mainly the intensity that will determine how many calories you’re going to burn. Following a very intense workout on an exercise bike, no matter its type, will yield better results in terms of weight loss than practicing quietly on an elliptical trainer.

If you have bad knees, or any other joint issue for that matter, you ought to stick with an elliptical trainer or a recumbent exercise bike.
Because although both stationary bikes and elliptical trainers are designed to go easy on your joints thanks to the low-impact exercises they offer, the latter option offers almost zero impact, since you won’t even have to lift your feet off the footpads.

Furthermore, elliptical trainers have a near-authentic running position and experience compared to stationary bikes, and they’re easier on the knees than a treadmill, for example, thus giving you the best of both worlds in this aspect.
Which Is Best for Building Muscle and Strength?
The right choice here will depend on which muscles you want to tone and strengthen.
There’s one thing that you need to keep in mind, though. The exercise bike and elliptical trainer are both cardio machines that will only help you get in some cardio after your workouts, not strength building fitness equipment. Don’t mistake these for the likes of a sumo smith machine, for example. In other words, they can help you tone some of your muscles, but they won’t help you double your gains.
Now that we got that out of the way, let’s know which machine is best for which muscle group!
If you’re looking to target your lower body, both the elliptical trainer and the exercise bike can work just fine for you. After all, both will allow you to train and build bigger quads, thighs, hamstrings, calves, and glutes.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for more of a full-body workout, then an elliptical trainer would be a better choice, considering that it can help you train not only your lower body muscles but also your arms, pecs, back muscles, and sculpt some 10-pack abs.
Finally, if you want to strengthen your core and get insane 12-pack abs to impress the ladies, get a stationary bike. Depending on the type, exercise bikes can cost anywhere from $400 to $2000. The price of elliptical trainers, on the other hand, can cost from less than $500 to over $3,000.
It all depends on the model, of course, and although you can probably get more bang for your buck purchasing an exercise bike, both machines are pretty similar when it comes to the average price.
Do note, however, that the difference between having to fork out more cash and getting a great also boils down to where you buy from. The price will vary depending on where you buy, and that’s fine.

Just like is the case with any other fitness equipment, both options have their benefits along with a fair share of drawbacks. Let’s look at both benefits and downsides for each of them;

The elliptical is not popular among fitness buffs for nothing, get a good machine, and you will have every reason to smile whenever you hop on it, as it brings home several cool perks.

This is one of the top perks of getting an elliptical trainer, and it’s the reason it’s called cross-trainer or X-trainer.

That makes these machines suitable for people with pre-existing joint issues and a better alternative to running, jogging, and jumping, all of which can put your joints under a lot of stress.

Unlike elliptical machines, exercise bikes don’t force you to stand up throughout your workout sessions. Instead, you can sit comfortably on the bike’s seat and pedal!

Granted, that can be done on an elliptical trainer as well, but, in that case, you’ll have to struggle to maintain your balance and keep your head from bobbing around.
